Soon is a relative term. To one person it might mean tomorrow, but from the perspective of eternity it could also mean a couple of thousand years. So basically, what it points to biblically is ‘be ready at any time’. In Revelations 22:20 Jesus Himself says He is coming soon.
We have been told so many times that Jesus is coming soon that some have gotten tired of those words and disregard them. I’m pretty sure that the word “soon" doesn't mean the same things to God as it does to us. So, the instruction is really telling us to make sure we are ready because the things He said are going to happen, will happen and they might happen before you are ready. That is the mystery and the challenge.
The parable in Matthew 25:1-13 speaks of ten virgins with their lamps, waiting for the bridegroom to come. All 10 of them fell asleep. The falling asleep doesn’t seem to be the problem. The problem was that only 5 were prepared when they woke up. I would like to be one of the ones who are ready. It doesn’t really matter if soon means tomorrow, 10 years or 100 years. The mystery and the challenge is simply to be ready, no matter when it is. And we should be ready to celebrate. It’s a good thing, but only if you are ready.
On another level, maybe Jesus coming soon means that He is will come quickly. The difference being that when all things are accomplished and the time is right, He will come quickly and then there won’t be any time to prepare.
