For me, learning to trust God came as the result of seeing and experiencing His goodness and His faithfulness time and time again. Our pastor has always said that everything good in his life is God’s fault. What a great way of turning around the phrases we use so often in the negative. When you surround yourself with others who know God as a good God, you start to see Him with new eyes. He is good, He is compassionate, He is full of grace. That being the case, you can also choose to trust Him; in other words, you make a conscious decision to trust, even if you are not sure yet. When we give Him the chance, He will show us just how faithful He is. He can be relied upon. He is trustworthy.
This song is the heart of my musical and spiritual journey. Knowing that God is faithful allows me to trust Him, even while walking through a storm. Without trust we tend to fall back into damaging fear patterns. Sometimes trust is simply a choice. Imagine a being who is almighty, who is outside time and who knows the beginning from the end. Maybe He does not step in to change a given situation because He knows what the far-reaching consequences would be in the long run for all those involved. Maybe that is the reason He does not step in as we think He should. Maybe it is not not because He doesn’t care, as we might think? We often want to second guess God, thinking we know better.
If we are honest, we can’t even manage our own lives, let alone understanding how our lives and actions affect the world around us. How much calmer could we be if we truly learned to trust the God who actually does know all things and knows what any given situation will eventually lead to.
