Every Song I have written has had a message or at least a line or two that helped prepare me for a challenge that I was about to face or was already facing. Either that, or it carried words of encouragement for someone else I was praying for but ended up encouraging me too.
Without exception the lyrics of my songs have brought me comfort, strength, courage, peace and/or joy. They have shown me that I am not alone. I feel like God continues to reveal himself to me through song. I encounter Him in a way that bypasses my intellect, which is what music is often able to do. I have been strengthened through my own songs and also through those of others. Many times I have found that someone else’s lyric or a line in one of my own songs gives me exactly the words I need to push through a personal battle I am facing. This is the reason why songs that are filled with scripture, with God’s Word, are so uplifting and refreshing. All scripture is given to teach, comfort, strengthen and reveal our maker. It reveals His goodness and His loving plan for us.
This song, based on Psalm 23, has helped generations to reach out to the God who guides, comforts and protects. Each and every one of us is important to our maker. He will always leave the 99 to find the 1 who has lost his or her way. But He also stays close to the ones who cling to Him and don’t wander away. The words of this Psalm are as true today as they ever were. Generations of God’s children have cried out with King David, Lord, You are my shepherd.
