This song was birthed after simply meditating on who God is. He is love. It is not that He loves us. It is that He IS love. Of course there can be no real love without relationship. The test of love is only possible through seeing how it operates in relationship with others. Following this train of thought, if God is love, it was only natural that He needed to share that love with others.
God’s love looks different to our idea of love, though. We feel like love has to be earned, not initially perhaps, but at some point. Depending on your background and upbringing, this can affect every relationship in your life. God’s love is always unconditional. The bible calls it Agape love which is different from the love we have come to know through our own life experiences. 1 Corinthinans 13:4-8 gives us a glimpse of what God’s kind of love looks like. It’s not something most of us have probably ever truly experienced.
I don’t believe unconditional love is humanly possible unless you are operating through the Spirit of God. It makes no sense what Jesus did for us unless you remember John 3: 16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life’. John 17:3 tells us: Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. God's love for the world is the only thing that makes sense of what Jesus did for us.
1 John 4 explains to us that We love because He loved us first. So basically we are only capable of true love through God. These verses show us that we humans have no idea what love actually is. We can see that in how love in the world operates. Is that really love. That feeling that we sometimes think of as love, does not come close to what Godly love is. Maybe we just have to change our language. We use the same word for that chemically driven feeling of excitement, butterflies, that we feel for someone we have just met and the feeling of joy and contentment that comes from being able to trust and rely on someone who has proved themselves safe and supportive. True love is not one sided. True love is patient and kind. True love will stay strong through hard times where sacrifices have to be made. True love is not infatuation, it evolves with time. In true love the intimacy grows and is committed no matter what other people say. That is Godly love..
